Sculptor. Augustin Alexandre Dumont was a French sculptor during the 19 th century. For generations, his family were sculptors, dating back to 18 th century sculptor, Pierre Dumont, who was a member of the Accademia di S Luca, Rome, and Leopold, Duke of Lorraine. He was the great-grandson of sculptors François Dumont and son of Jacques-Edme Dumont. In 1818 he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He received the Prix de Rome for sculpture in 1823 and spent the next seven years in Italy, producing works such as the "Infant Bacchus Nurtured by the Nymph Leucothea" in 1830, which is on exhibit at Semur-en-Auxois, Musée Municipal, located outside of Paris. Returning too France shortly after the July Revolution of 1830, he received several public commissions, including the 1835 statue of "Nicolas Poussin" for the Salle Ordinaire des Séances in the Palais de l'Institut de France in Paris. The government of the Second Republic commissioned him to produce a statue of "Maréchal Thomas Bugeaud de la Piconnerie" in 1850 at the Chateau in Versailles. His grandfather had produced figurative sculpture in stone and stucco in the chapel Versailles many years earlier. Besides various large public sculptures of historical figures that he produced for provincial centers under the Second Empire, he executed a number of portrait sculptures, such as that of the naturalist "Alexander von Humboldt" in 1871 at the Chateau in Versailles. Many of his public monuments of political figures were destroyed under the Commune in 1871. His health declined starting in 1875, which halted his work. Throughout his career he had numerous students including Jean-Joseph Marie Carriès . His 1839 "Inauguration of the July Column," a bronze medal, has been on exhibition since 2014 at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. His sister was Louise Dumont Farrenc , a prolific French composer, virtuoso pianist and teacher.
